On June 3rd, 2023, the vibrant community of Brazoria County came together to celebrate love, diversity, and unity at the very first Brazoria County Pride festival. Held in the picturesque surroundings of Lake Jackson, Texas, this family-friendly event marked a significant moment in the county's history, and I had the distinct honor of photographing this joyous occasion. As an ally, it's important to me to celebrate all walks of life!
A Day to Remember

The Brazoria County Pride Picnic was a celebration like no other, bringing together people from all walks of life to embrace and support the LGBTQ+ community. As I arrived at the event, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation. The picnic area was adorned with rainbow flags, colorful decorations, and an array of booths and activities for attendees of all ages - including a sensory friendly area.
Friends gathered in groups and children played happily in a bounce house. The sense of community was palpable, with everyone coming together to celebrate love in its many forms. From the moment the event began, it was clear that this was more than just a picnic; it was a powerful statement of inclusion and acceptance in a historically conservative area. In fact, BCP board member Jackson Johll commented on attendance being much larger than anticipated.
Highlights of the Day

The picnic featured a variety of activities and entertainment that kept everyone engaged throughout the day. A well-known community member, Timothy Wayne, emceed the event. From drag performances which captivated the audience, to a pride pet parade. Food trucks lined the perimeter of the nearest parking lot, offering a diverse selection of delicious treats that catered to all tastes.
A Stand Against Hate

One of the most awe-inspiring acts of the day was a powerful demonstration of solidarity when a small group of protestors attempted to disrupt the event. In an inspiring display of unity and support, community members banded together to hold up large LGBT community flags, effectively blocking the view of the protestors. This spontaneous act of courage and love not only shielded the attendees from the negativity but also underscored the strength and resilience of the community. The sight of people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to form a protective barrier with their flags was incredibly moving. It was a moment that encapsulated the spirit of the event: a celebration of love that refused to be overshadowed by hate.
Capturing the Magic

As the official photographer for the event, I was privileged to witness and document countless moments of joy and connection. From the heartfelt embraces shared between friends and loved ones and beyond, every snapshot told a story of love and unity. The colors, the smiles, and the genuine expressions of happiness and belonging made my job an absolute pleasure.
Looking Ahead
The success of the first Brazoria County Pride Picnic is a testament to the power of community and the leadership of soon-to-be Dr. Jessica Truscott and the entire board of Brazoria County Pride (501c3). As the day drew to a close, there was a shared feeling of hope and optimism for the future. This event has set a precedent for what will undoubtedly become a cherished annual tradition in Brazoria County.
For me, being part of this historic event was an incredible honor. It was more than just a job; it was an opportunity to contribute to a cause I deeply believe in and to capture moments that will be remembered for years to come. I am grateful for the chance to be a part of this celebration and look forward to passing the mantle to another deserving photographer next year.
As we reflect on the success of this year's picnic, let's carry forward the message of love, acceptance, and unity, not just during Pride Month, but every day. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and loved for who they are.
Until next year, Brazoria County – keep shining, keep loving, and keep celebrating Pride! 🌈
